Sunken Shower / Tile Roman Tub Bathroom Remodeling Project Austin Tx Pt 2
This is part 2 of a bathroom remodeling project we are currently working on. It is in the Zilker Park part of Austin TX. Our last post showed all of the steps up until the framing. This sunken shower / tiled roman tub is on a pier and beam foundation. The last post shows the before picture of this bathroom prior to the remodel.

Even though we are versed in Hydro Ban and Schluter, We felt using a fiberglass resin would be the best way to waterproof the shower. Here are 2 pictures highlighting the clean fiberglass work. After the fiberglass shower was dry, we sanded it down to prepare the surface with a bonding adhesive.

We floated out the walls and steps with a pool concrete material. Everything below the water line of he roman tub / sunken shower was coated with a waterproof material. Above that we used a rubberized waterproof coating .

We skim coated the seams and floor with thinset. Screeding them with a straight edge which filled in the low spots with thin set. We are using mosaic tile on both the walls and floor of the bathroom, therefore we need everything to be as flat as possible before the mosaic tile installation.

Here you can see the slope of the shower / roman tub floor. We also floated the bathroom floor 2 more times to get it flat. Using a fortified thin set , not self leveling or plane and patch which do not hold up in a wet environment.

These final pictures show all of the tile work in this beautiful sunken shower / Roman tub. This bathroom remodeling project is in Austin TX. Take note of how all of the tile joints line up nicely, this is no easy feat.
