Custom Stone Shower Bathroom Remodeling Austin TX
This is a custom shower remodeling project that we did on the north side of Austin TX. While I did not design this bathroom, I am particularly proud of this project. It was a fun project because of the complexity of the stone work. Even though I regularly work with different types of stone, this was the first time that I have used Travertine in over 10 years. At one point, this was the most sought after stone. I used to use it on almost every bathroom remodeling project I participated in.
The client was a retired home builder and I felt honored that he selected us to perform the work in his own home.
I wanted to do this blog posting to specifically showcase the details of the stonework that we performed. We were only hired specifically to install the shower pan, waterproofing, and the stone. Hopefully he will send over some pictures when he is done with the rest of the bathroom.
As you look at the picture below, take notice of all of the chair rail used on many of the different areas. The chair rail is installed on both sides of the pony wall. The 4 foot x 3/4″ thick slabs of stone are inset between them. These walls all have slope from the outside to the inside of the shower. We also had to maintain consistency in the 1/8″ grout joints. All of the outer edges of the stone were profiled freehand with an angle grinder. We then polished to match the honed finish on the surface of the stone. The decco banding is a mosaic material of a different thickness than the travertine stone used in the rest of the shower. We have a trick (which will remain top secret!! ) for how we float out the chanel
