Sunken Shower / Tub Bathroom Remodeling Project in Austin Tx Pt 1
This bathroom remodeling project in Austin Tx is one of the more interesting projects I have encountered in quite some time. The homeowner just moved into this bungalow in the Zilker Park neighborhood of Austin Tx and wanted to immediately remodel the slate bathroom that had been remodeled by the previous
The homeowner was wanting to install a sunken tub shower in place of the existing shower. We also moved the wall back into the closet 8 inches to minimize the claustrophobic vibe of the existing bathroom.
After demolishing the existing bathroom we stripped everything down to studs.
We cut out the existing floor joists and had to rebuild the support for the load bearing wall. We poured 8 footings to support the weight of the tub / shower and add support for the house.
We then added 6×6 beams to Simpson hardware anchored in the concrete
We then framed in the side walls of the new tub / shower which is also supporting the house
After framing everything,we had all of the plumbing roughed in. We replaced all of the cast Iron drains throughout the house with all new PVC throughout and used PEX for our valves.
We then sheeted the walls of the tub and main wall with 3/4 inch plywood
The bathroom floor got hardibacker installed in a mortar bed
We then Floated out the low spot in the floor and on the back wall.
We will give you updates on this sunken shower bathroom remodeling project in Austin Tx in future posts. Stay tuned.
